From an underutilized space beneath an elevated railway to a vibrant community sports park, VIASCAPE Design has transformed a neglected urban area in Shanghai into a dynamic public destination.
Located near Caoxi Road Metro Station in Shanghai, China, The Happy Spot Under the Light Rail is an innovative urban renewal project designed by VIASCAPE Design. Covering approximately 3,540 m², the project reimagines the space beneath an elevated light rail line, turning it into a multifunctional recreational park that brings new energy to the surrounding neighborhood.
Revitalizing Forgotten Urban Spaces
Previously, the area beneath the elevated railway was largely overlooked, characterized by concrete structures, limited public amenities, and underutilized land.
Rather than allowing this valuable urban space to remain neglected, VIASCAPE Design introduced a creative landscape strategy that transforms the site into an accessible, engaging, and community-oriented environment.
The project represents the second phase of a broader urban regeneration initiative, following the successful development of Caoxi Road Pocket Park.
A Vibrant and Multifunctional Sports Destination
Stretching approximately 200 meters in length, with a width ranging from 18 to 26 meters, the park incorporates a variety of sports and recreational facilities designed to accommodate different age groups and interests.
The revitalized space includes basketball courts, badminton areas, mini football facilities, table tennis zones, fitness spaces, and children’s play areas.
One of the project’s most distinctive features is its bold use of color. Vibrant shades of blue, yellow, and pink, combined with geometric ground patterns, create a lively visual identity that contrasts with the massive concrete infrastructure overhead.
This colorful design approach not only enhances the park’s aesthetic appeal but also creates an inviting atmosphere that encourages physical activity, social interaction, and community engagement.
Rethinking Urban Infrastructure Through Sustainable Design
Beyond its recreational functions, the project demonstrates how thoughtful landscape architecture can unlock the hidden potential of existing urban infrastructure.
By repurposing the land beneath an elevated transit system, the development introduces much-needed public amenities without requiring additional land acquisition or large-scale construction.
The integration of greenery, pedestrian-friendly spaces, and recreational facilities contributes to a healthier urban environment while encouraging active lifestyles and stronger neighborhood connections.
Completed in 2025, the project reflects an increasingly important approach to urban development: transforming overlooked infrastructure spaces into meaningful public environments.
Small Spaces, Big Urban Impact
The Happy Spot Under the Light Rail offers a compelling example of how creative urban design can reshape the everyday experience of city residents.
As cities around the world face increasing population density and limited available land, projects like this demonstrate that valuable public spaces can emerge from the most unexpected locations.
Great urban design is not always about building something new. Sometimes, it is about discovering new possibilities within the spaces we already have.
The Shanghai project also provides valuable inspiration for rapidly developing cities, including those in Vietnam, where spaces beneath elevated railways, bridges, and transportation infrastructure could be transformed into parks, sports facilities, and vibrant community destinations.
