Project Background

SOFT BAKE is a community renovation project located in Nanchang. The building is an old residence and the original layout cannot be changed due to the current conditions. The overall design can only be considered based on the existing layout. In the space, we use simple and native materials as the keynote, and the rough and calm physical texture contrasts with the soft temperature inherent in baking. The simple and restrained space carrier carries the relaxation of bread, light and people, forming a symbiosis of hardness and softness.

Soft bake is a community renovation project located in Nanchang, converted from an old residential house. Constrained by existing site conditions, the original layout cannot be altered, so the whole design has to be developed based on the existing framework. Space is defined with plain and raw materials as the keynote.

The entrance is treated with large glass to bring natural light into the room to the maximum extent. A wooden structure combined with flexible fabric is used above the door to let in soft direct sunlight. The yard is equipped with multiple casual seating spots to create a relaxing and comfortable community atmosphere.

The entrance features extensive glass panels to maximize natural light penetration into the interior. Above the storefront, wooden structures are paired with soft fabrics to soften direct sunlight. Multiple casual seating spots are arranged in the courtyard, creating a laidback and pleasant communal lounge atmosphere.

A large area of white space is used indoors to eliminate redundant modifications and create a sense of breathing in the space, allowing the design to return to the space itself. At the same time, the spatial hierarchical relationship is handled with restraint and a calm sense of ritual is created in the details.

The interior adopts extensive blankwall treatment and dispenses with redundant decorations to create a sense of spatial breathing, allowing the design to return to the space itself. Meanwhile, spatial layers are handled in a restrained manner to build a serene sense of ritual through details.

In the interior, based on the original architectural pattern, the transparency of the space is maintained to the maximum extent, and migration lines are planned to create a flexible space.

Based on the original building layout, the interior maximizes spatial transparency. A circulating circulation path is planned to create a flexible space.
