The project marks a new milestone in the research conducted by Michelangelo Pugliese on themes of landscape, public space, and urban regeneration, work already recognized through major national and international awards. It is a professional journey that finds some of its most significant areas of experimentation in the towns and inland regions of Calabria.

In Scido, the landscape architect has completed a project that is modest in scale and cost yet vital to the community’s life: a venue for cultural and educational events, also conceived as a space for daily interaction, pausing, and socializing.

The project stems from the existing topography and focuses primarily on the design of the ground plane. Terraced seating, pathways, hardscaping, and vegetation define a fluid, unified spatial layout, where an informal theater appears not as an isolated object, but as an integral part of the urban landscape.

“landscape interventions, even when low-cost, can bring about significant change”, the designer emphasizes. “In inland areas, public space is central to collective life. landscape design must be able to interpret a place, connect nature, architecture, and community, and transform available resources into tangible opportunities for regeneration”.

Scido’s mayor, Giuseppe Zampogna, also expressed great satisfaction: “We are handing over a new, welcoming space with a strong identity to the community – a space destined to become a focal point for the cultural and social life of the surrounding area”.

The project in Scido reaffirms the value of specialized expertise in the transformation of territories. landscape architecture, knowledge of morphology, public space design, technical proficiency, and high-quality execution must all combine to create interventions that are impactful, enduring, and deeply rooted in their specific contexts.

With this project, Michelangelo Pugliese adds a new element to his work on the regeneration of Calabrian landscapes, demonstrating that even in small towns it is possible to create contemporary, distinctive spaces capable of strengthening a sense of belonging and offering new perspectives for community life.
