On Lion-Feuchtwanger-Strasse in Berlin-Kaulsdorf, a striking example of contemporary re-densification has taken shape within a typical large-scale housing estate from the GDR era. The architects at FAR frohn&rojas and the landscape architects at Topotek 1 have created an ensemble that reinterprets the principles of serial construction while focussing on lively, community-oriented outdoor spaces. Particular attention is paid to shared spaces: the central courtyard, open stairways and semi-public meeting zones encourage active neighbourly interaction. At the heart of it all is the “red stage”, designed as a place for exchange and encounter. The robust, modular and precisely colour-coordinated furniture from Vestre plays a defining role in shaping its character.
Serial architecture with a new open design
The two six-storey buildings developed by FAR frohn&rojas are defined by a modular construction system that allows flexible floor plans and reduces the ecological footprint. The open design with arcades and stainless-steel mesh elements creates a sense of transparency and permeability – a deliberate counterpoint to the hermetic character of classic prefabricated high-rise buildings. In total, 124 apartments have been built, complemented by a lower mobility level with bicycle parking, charging points and a parcel station. The two linear blocks sit atop a base whose elevated terrace – the “red stage” – is accessed via open staircases accented in red. Circular openings enable visual connections and provide space for the trees located at the lower level, creating a vertically interconnected outdoor space.
Outdoor space as a place of encounter
The centrepiece of the project is the open communal platform on the base, conceived as a semi-public meeting point. Topotek 1 stages this area in ruby red (RAL 3003), carefully coordinating the colour of the ground surface and the furnishings. A wide range of Vestre products defines the atmosphere: the round BUZZ table with five seats forms the communicative hub, while the APRIL, APRIL GO and BERLIN series provide additional versatile seating and table options. The consistently ruby-red furniture, including matching planters, echoes both the clear geometry and the colour scheme of the surroundings. Table-tennis and play stations further expand the options, transforming the outdoor areas into a vibrant destination for all age groups.
Colour as a social catalyst
The colour red is not merely an accent but a defining design element. It signals activity and community, transforming the outdoor space into an experience and creating a strong visual statement within an environment otherwise dominated by grey and green. This approach aligns with Topotek 1’s philosophy of designing landscape as a stage: “The space feels like a red carpet that invites different uses and turns the site into an open stage.” The sculpted topography, the consistent use of colour and the clear design of the furniture combine to create an iconic identity that fosters interaction and heightens the quality of spending time in this environment.
