Appreciation towards balbek bureau for providing the following description:
balbek bureau is pleased to announce the opening of 81 Funky Japanese – a contemporary Japanese café-restaurant located in the heart of Kiev’s Zoloti Vorota historic district. The project demonstrates the firm’s holistic approach to hospitality, covering interior design, brand identity and comprehensive restaurant consulting services. 81 Funky Japanese is based on the concept of “Wakon Yōsai” – a contemporary interpretation of Japanese values: traditional Eastern materials and aesthetics are seamlessly integrated into modern Western culture. The result is a dynamic, multi-level space that bridges the gap between the classic Japanese kissaten and a modern urban lounge.

All-weather dynamic space
A Space for Every Time of Day
This place is a dynamic space that changes energy over time. “Funky” narrative design
Design with a “Funky” Narrative
The store name is taken from +81 – Japan’s international telephone area code, which forms the basis of the venue’s visual identity. A telephone cord shaped into a noodle appears repeatedly in the space. balbek bureau’s design team viewed the interior as a narrative canvas, weaving unique details into the restaurant’s texture.

The design team at balbek bureau treated the interior as a canvas for storytelling, weaving unique details into the fabric of the restaurant:

Adaptable atmosphere: The site is located in a semi-underground space, and the design overcomes the limitations of architectural conditions through intelligent lighting. Custom-made luminous wall panels – reminiscent of bamboo poles and traditional shoji screens – create a soft, ambient light that replaces natural light, evoking the feeling of being on the streets of Tokyo at night.
