These Sconces Mirror The Path Of The Sun

Published on

What if a wall lamp could tell time? Boston-based studio Kādns, founded in 2022 by industrial designers Echo Zhan and Viola Yingqiu Huang, answers that question with horological luminaires. The duo’s Horizon sconces translate the ombré shift of sunrise or sunset into functional decor. Animating the rectangular face of Canvas, LEDs trace a circular arc that gradually fades in and out, completing a full rotation in either a 1-minute loop or a full 24 hours. Tones segue from bluish purple to soft white above and below the “horizon line,” and the Kelvin temperature shifts warmer or cooler to simulate dawn or dusk. When switched off, the sconce looks just like a blank canvas, belying its complex construction: The frame and light source are covered in spandex fabric, then a sprayable polymer coating that dries into a tough-yet-flexible translucent skin. kadns.co
