Appreciation towards Antoine Aunave, Flora Peyrot, Mathilde Steenhaut, Luc Loviton (contact: f.peyrot5@orange.fr) for providing the following description:
“The Sound of Wood” is the selected project of the Festival des Cabanes 2026. A wooden line traverses the Alpine slopes, where wind becomes the material of construction. The village is nestled deep in the valley, as if gently held by the mountains surrounding it, far away from the hustle and bustle of the world. The air seems thicker and always carries a refreshing coolness; the sun hiding behind the mountains seems to be happy to maintain this coolness. Here, the scenery is not only worth seeing, but also worth listening to. In winter, the snow wraps the valley in a soothing silence; in summer, the slopes vibrate with a gentle but constant hum. Everything seems close at hand and yet far away. One morning, the first breeze stirred the wood, and the sound of it singing loudly was heard in the distance.
“The Sound of Wood” winning project of the 2026 Festival des Cabanes. A line of timber on an Alpine slope, where the wind becomes a material to build with. Nestled in the hollow of the valley, the village seems held within the mountains that embrace it, as if sheltered from the bustle of the world. The air feels denser, filled with a constant freshness that the sun seems to preserve with pleasure, hidden behind the peaks. Here, the landscape is something to be observed, to be listened to. When winter smothers it beneath its snow in a soothing silence, summer sets its slopes vibrating with a cautious, continuous hum. Everything seems close, yet distant, when, one morning, the sound of wood singing at full volume can be heard in the distance, stirred by the first rising breeze.

The mountain valleys then emerge, draped in a whole new level of wooden wind chimes. The first ray of sunlight falls on the wind chime, illuminating this interface. The valley becomes a musical instrument, and people gain a playground. Pick up a stick and start playing.

Then the combes emerge, dressed in this new horizontal layer of chimes. The first rays of sunlight catch them, illuminating an interface. The valley becomes an instrument, and Man a playground. We pick up a stick, and begin to play.

In this unexpected conversation, the gaze changes and the body moves accordingly. As participants, we extend our arms forward through the wall where music unfolds around the movement. The vibrations spread and the pitch changes as the length of the stick shortens. At first glance, the slender wood cross-section does not reveal the structure’s undulating sail-like shape; the wind chimes in the wooden frame and the entire installation follow the same simple logic: crossing the terrain in a horizontal gesture.
In this unexpected dialogue, the gaze changes and the body acts. As an actor, arms stretched forward, we cross the wall as it unfolds musically around the gesture. The wave propagates, and with it the notes evolve as the cut wooden batten shortens. While the slender section of wood gives no hint of the undulating sail of the structure, the chimes of the timber framing hold together through a simple logic: a horizontal gesture transcending the topography.

The entire wooden house is organized with the same cross-section: the core is a 4 cm wooden bar, which coordinates the scale, bears the load, provides support and resists lateral effects, and in particular transforms the wind into music through its own swing. The slender and slender members produce subtle flexures, causing the highest point to sway gently. In this seemingly peaceful landscape, a dizzy experience emerges; the handrails extending along the elevated walkway quickly stabilize the body.

This single section, a 4 cm wooden batten at the heart of the cabin, regulates, dimensions, supports, braces and, above all, instruments the wind through its movement. The subtle buckling induced by this slender, elongated profile creates a slight sway at its highest point. An experience of vertigo emerges at the heart of this seemingly calm and serene landscape, quickly secured by the handrail running along the elevated walkway.

The asymmetry of the structure creates a hierarchy between the different facades: it extends above the floor and meets the visitor’s hand on the north side. From the moment one approaches the site, these interfaces bring the body inside, exposing visitors to the vast landscape. In the void of the cabin, between the swaying sails, a cave filled with wind chimes retains a sense of intimacy, as if to reward curious visitors who dare to pass through the installation’s walls.

The asymmetry of the structure, extending beyond the floor to reach for the visitor’s hand to the north, establishes a hierarchy between the different façades. These interfaces engage the body from the moment the site is approached, bringing the visitor face to face with the vastness of the landscape. Within the hollow of the cabin, between the oscillating sails, a chime-filled grotto preserves a sense of intimacy, as a reward for the more adventurous visitors who venture through the project’s walls.

The processed wood organizes the site horizontally, responds to the forest vertically, and accommodates the body with depth. The regular structural rhythm creates an interesting interaction with the irregular ground, providing multiple uses, sensory experiences and framed views. This rhythm extends in a certain direction, running towards a landscape and a vision, carrying the body forward and entering an idyllic journey.
The sound of wood resonates in the valley.

The geometry of machined timber holds the territory in its horizontality, the forest in its verticality, and the body in its depth. The regular rhythm of the structure, playfully responding to the irregularity of the ground, offers a multiplicity of uses, sensations and framed views. This rhythm escapes in a given direction, towards a landscape, a view, projecting the body into this bucolic flight forward.
The Sound of Wood makes the valley resonate.
