Sabine Marcelis Reimagines The Rug As Sculptural Seating

Published on

A moment frozen in time—namely, the act of a carpet being unfurled—takes on sculptural presence in Roll, a series of one-offs by Rotterdam-based Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis for cc-tapis. The concept is both a rug and a seat, with a flat surface for the body and a rounded backrest for leaning against. It’s a study in contrasts (albeit unified by a monochromatic palette), with soft wool pile meeting the hardness of resin, a material central to Marcelis’s artistic practice. Roll was developed through Made in Milan, CC-Tapis’s in-house prototyping hub, and uses robo-tufting, a production method that allows for complex shapes. The three designs, Burgundy, Rust, and Pink, were conceived for Mexico City Art Week, where they were displayed at a 1970s residence by architect Agustín Hernández. cc-tapis.com
