Transforming one of Oristano’s most significant squares – an entry point to the historic center – and returning to citizens a public space rich in history but currently lacking a defined urban role: these were the goals that guided the architectural firm abp architetti in shaping the redevelopment of Piazza Manno.

The project, realized between 2023 and 2025, originated from a design competition launched by the Municipality of Oristano in 2020. Following the competition, the firm was entrusted with both the subsequent design phases and the management of on-site construction.

Before the intervention, the square faced numerous critical issues: a fragmented and undefined spatial layout, deteriorated paving, and uncontrolled vehicular traffic. The area presented itself as a vast, worn-out expanse of paving, interrupted by a roadway leading into the historic center. On one side stood the disused former prison; on the other, a middle school and a few commercial spaces.

Through simple yet effective design interventions, a new layout was conceived. The concept centers on re-establishing connections between the edges of the square and emphasizing the public buildings and architectural landmarks that define its perimeter. The design introduces granite bands set within a basalt-paved surface, generating a clear spatial rhythm and a strong visual dialogue with the surrounding architecture.

Circular planters emerge within the paving layout, preserving the existing trees and enhancing their role within the square. The addition of semi-circular benches made of wood and granite, creating comfortable spaces that invite rest and social interaction.

During the construction phase, archaeological remains were uncovered beneath the existing paving. To preserve these findings, certain modifications were made to the original competition proposal. In line with the project’s principles, a large green area was introduced along the wall of the former prison – significantly increasing permeable surfaces and reinforcing the building’s role as a key urban backdrop along the eastern edge of the square.

Responding to the square’s unique geometry, the project introduces a new paving layout combined with integrated vegetation, creating flexible spatial configurations that can accommodate a variety of uses. The unified design transforms the area into a fully pedestrian space, removing architectural barriers and meeting accessibility standards to ensure seamless access throughout.

Today, the square’s role as a venue for public events reflects its renewed identity within the city: a welcoming and adaptable space that supports everyday life, gatherings, celebrations, and public occasions alike.
