多义景观：合肥骆岗机场建于上世纪70年代，曾经是城市的交通枢纽。但随着城市建设了规模更大的新机场，骆岗机场于2013年关闭。2019年，政府计划将机场转变为面积达12.7km²的全球最大的城市中央公园和一个中央商务区，并在周边发展一个新城。政府希望将废弃机场的一部分作为2023年国际园林博览会的会址，通过举办园博会的契机将其转变为城市绿色空间。

DY Landscape：Hefei Luogang Airport, built in the 1970s, was once the city’s transport hub. It closed in 2013 when a new larger airport was built. In 2019, the government planned to transform the abandoned airport into a 12.7 km² central park and business district, the largest of its kind globally, and to develop a new town around it. As part of this initiative, the government proposed repurposing part of the former airport for the 2023 China International Garden Expo, using the event as a catalyst to convert it into an urban green space.

中央公园的规划保留了原有的机场跑道，并将航站楼等建筑转变为新的展览、商务等功能。 园博园位于跑道东侧，包含百花园、38个展览花园（show gardens）、展览馆、园博小镇、生态公园等部分。 百花园紧邻机场跑道，南侧是停机坪和航站楼，东侧是国际展园区域，位于园博园室外展区的核心位置。 基址呈长条形，长590m，最宽72m，最窄30m，主要包括一长条草地、一小片树林和一个停车场。 根据园博园总体规划，百花园将是一个展示开花植物的花园。

The central park masterplan retained the airport runway and repurposed airport facilities such as terminal buildings for exhibitions and business purposes. The Garden Expo Park, located to the east of the runway, includes the Blooming Garden, 38 show gardens, an exhibition hall, the Garden Expo Town, and an ecological park. Adjacent to the runway, with the apron and terminal to the south and the international show gardens zone to the east, the site of the Blooming Garden was a 590m-long strip, 72m at its widest and 30m at its narrowest, consisting of a stretch of grassland, a small grove, and a parking lot. According to the masterplan, the Blooming Garden would be a garden dedicated to displaying diverse flowering plants in the Expo.

挑战与策略：

设计面临的最大挑战是如何将为飞机服务的场地转变为为人服务的场所。
从尺度上，场地与保留的跑道和停机坪相连，周围异常空旷，尺度巨大，需要加以空间限定，将空间从飞机的尺度缩小到人的尺度（建立人性化的尺度）。

从地形上，场地地面非常平坦，单调无聊，视线一览无余，必须进行一定的地形塑造来创造空间的变化。

从植被上，整个场地除了靠近航站楼有一小片树林，其余只有野草，异常荒芜，设计需要用丰富的植被创造自然的场所，改善场地生态功能，并体现百花园的主题，实现园林展的目标。

因此，百花园的设计既要在内部创造人性化的空间，又要与外部开阔的跑道和谐地衔接；通过塑造场地的地表，打破原来的单调平坦，形成多变的立体的空间，提供多样的游览路径和体验方式；要为植物生长创造条件，创造独特的景观艺术的同时展示先进的园艺艺术。 此外，还要考虑园博园临时展览与未来长期景观之间的平衡。

Challenges and strategies

The biggest challenge for the design was how to transform a space originally intended for aircraft into an environment that serves the people.

In terms of scale, the site is adjacent to the runway and apron which are immensely empty and expansive. This vast dimension requires spatial definition to reduce the space from aircraft scales to human scales, creating a more human-friendly environment.

Topographically, the site is notably flat and offers wide yet monotonous views, thus requiring strategic terrain shaping to introduce dynamics and diversity.

Regarding vegetation, except for a grove near the terminal, the site is barren, with only wild grasses. Rich vegetation is therefore needed not only to create a natural environment and improve ecological functions, but also to reflect the Blooming Garden’s theme and meet the goals of Garden Expo.

Thus, the design of Blooming Garden aims to create human-scale spaces internally while also harmonizing with the open runway externally. By sculpting the site’s topography, the design intends to transform the original monotonous environment into a dynamic landscape, offering diverse paths and experiences. It also aims to provide optimal conditions for plant growth, presenting unique landscape aesthetics and displaying horticultural art. Additionally, balancing temporary exhibition needs with long-term landscape sustainability is a key consideration.

百花园的设计是从地表塑造开始的。

场地的北段，一条之字形道路将地表切割成两半，通过抬升一侧地面、下沉另一侧地面，形成了在不同层次上的两个空间。 高层空间是朝向跑道的缓坡，种植不同品种的樱花。 平整的坡地和大片的樱花形成简洁的景观，与尺度宽阔的跑道相呼应。 樱花树下的草坡，为人们提供了休憩和欣赏在跑道和草地上活动的人群的场所。 低层空间是草本花园，种植各种花卉，穿插在花田中的木栈道和栈道旁的木平台，让人们有机会近距离欣赏美丽的花卉。 在规则式的花田中间，分布着4个由栏杆围合、有着有机形轮廓的色彩花园。 花园分别为红色园、黄色园、白色园和蓝色园，以自然群落的种植方式展示不同色彩的植物。 花园内的尺度更私密，植物更丰富，其中2个花园内部有休息廊和座椅，为游客提供休憩的机会。

The design of the Blooming Garden began with shaping the terrain.

In the northern part of the site, a zigzagging path carefully divides the ground in half, creating two distinct spaces by raising one side and lowering the other. The upper level features a gentle slope facing the runway, planted with various cherry blossom species, forming a simple and elegant landscape that complements the expansive runway and provides spaces for residents’ daily activities and interactions. Below, an herbaceous garden with diverse flowers is interlaced with boardwalks and platforms, offering visitors the opportunity to appreciate the flowers up close. Interspersed in the formal flower fields are four color-themed gardens, enclosed by organically shaped railings. The gardens—Red, Yellow, White, and Blue—display plants of different color ranges in natural groupings. These gardens are more intimate in scale and feature a rich variety of plants, with two gardens featuring pergolas and seating for visitors.

高层和低层空间之间的耐候钢挡土墙为草本花园限定了西侧边界，也将这一主要的花卉展示区与跑道空间在视线上隔开，使百花园有更为亲切的尺度。 高层和低层空间之间0-4m的高差，为百花园带来了丰富的空间变化。 沿着高层空间的边缘，是一条之字形的路径和2个观景平台，观景平台位于花园的最高处，在这里人们不仅可以俯瞰草本花园，以另一个视角欣赏植物之美，而且可以远眺标志性的机场塔台。 耐候钢栏杆和耐候钢挡土墙的表皮上的小孔组成了抽象的花卉图案，烘托着花园的主题。 一个木平台露天剧场联系了上下两层空间，为游人提供了非正式表演的舞台和小坐休息的场所。 两条小路穿过挡土墙，连接了草本花园和跑道（runway）。 一条长约100m的长廊位于上层之字形路径的下方，背靠挡墙，面向镜面水渠和花田，为游人提供了休憩空间，以及在阴影中看阳光下的花园、并欣赏植物在水中倒影的视角。

A corten steel retaining wall between the upper and lower spaces defines the western boundary of the herbaceous garden and separates it from the runway spatially and visually, creating a more intimate environment. The height difference of 0 to 4 meters between the upper and lower spaces creates rich spatial diversity within the Blooming Garden. Along the edge of the upper space is a zigzag path, with two viewing platforms formed by expanding the path. Situated at the highest point of the garden, these platforms allow visitors to not only overlook the herbaceous garden and appreciate the plants from a different perspective but also gaze into the distance at the iconic airport control tower. Perforations in the corten steel railing panels and retaining walls form abstract floral patterns, emphasizing the garden’s theme. A wooden amphitheater connects the two levels, offering an informal performance stage and a seating area. Two paths pass through the retaining wall, linking the herbaceous garden to the runway. Below the zigzag path on the upper level, a 100m-long corridor sits against the wall and faces a mirrored water channel and flower fields, providing resting areas along with shaded views of sunlit plants and their beautiful reflections.

百花园的南部，园博园道路将场地划分为狭长的地块和紧邻航站楼的小树林。 狭长地块同样被之字形道路分成两个部分，西侧延续了朝向跑道的缓坡和坡上的樱花林，东侧则是平坦的乔木花园，岛状种植区内种植不同品种的海棠。 东、西两部分交界处形成了立面起伏的耐候钢挡土墙，一系列长条座椅结合挡土墙设置，提供了惬意的休息场所。 地面铺装有抽象的花卉图案。

In the southern part of the Blooming Garden, an park road divides the site into a narrow strip and a grove near the terminal. Similar to the northern part, the strip is also split by a zigzag pathway into two parts: a gentle slope with cherry blossoms in the west, and a flat arbor garden with islands of various crabapple trees in the east. At the intersection of these sections, long benches, backed against the undulating corten steel retaining wall, provide comfortable resting spots. The pavements is decorated with abstract floral patterns.

场地东南角靠近航站楼的部分，现状是一片生长良好的树林。 设计保留了原有植被，设置了道路和座椅，提供林中漫步和安静休息的场所。 树林边缘的一个停车场被改造成休息广场，原有的树木被保留，树下增添了折线形的休息座凳。

In the southeastern corner, the existing grove near the terminal is preserved and complemented with paths and seating for leisurely strolls and quiet relaxation. A former parking lot at the grove’s edge is remodeled into a resting plaza, retaining the original trees and adding zigzag-shaped benches under the canopy.

经过精心的设计，百花园从原来平坦的、一览无余的场地，转变为高低错落的花园，具有大与小、明与暗、阔与狭不同空间，高与低、曲与直不同的观赏路径和观赏视点，以及多样的游人休息场所。 设计在抬升一部分地表的同时下沉了另一部分地表，使得土方可以在场地内平衡。 下沉的坡地可以将雨水留在场地中，坡面最低处的排水设施可以将多余的雨水排走，为植物生长创造良好条件。 设计选用多年生植物、宿根植物和大量的木本开花植物塑造色彩缤纷的植物景观，在满足园林展需求的同时保证不同季节的观赏效果，又能尽量减少展后植物的维护成本。 硬质景观采用耐候钢、透水混凝土、竹板等材料，耐久且对环境友好。 花园内设置了充足的休息设施，能够很好地承担花园在园林展后作为城市开放空间的功能。

为期3个月的园林博览会，园博园累计接待了632万游客，其中，百花园是最受游客欢迎的区域之一。 博览会闭幕以后，骆岗中央公园已经是市民周末休闲度假的热门地点，百花园作为公园中一个尺度亲切的具有艺术感的公共花园，成为人们闲逛、休憩、赏花、观景和享受阳光和自然的场所。

Through elaborate design, the Blooming Garden has been transformed from its originally open flat site into a layered and dynamic landscape with varying elevations and depths, offering a diverse range of spaces—both large and small, light-filled and shaded, expansive and intimate—that provide ever-changing perspectives as well as abundant areas for activity and relaxation. The design raises part of the site while lowering others, allowing the earthwork to balance within the site. Sunken slopes retain rainwater, while drainage at the lowest points manages excess water, creating optimal conditions for plant growth. The garden features a vibrant plant landscape with perennials and flowering trees that ensure year-round color while minimizing post-exhibition maintenance costs. Durable and eco-friendly materials like corten steel, permeable concrete, and bamboo are used, balancing durability with environmental friendliness. Ample resting facilities and flexible spaces support its function as an open urban space in the post-Expo period.

The Garden Expo Park received a total of 6.32 million visitors during the 3-month event, with the Blooming Garden being a top attraction. Following the Garden Expo’s conclusion, Luogang Central Park has become a favored destination for weekend leisure and relaxation among residents. As an intimately scaled, artistic public garden within Luogang Central Park, the Blooming Garden now serves as a space for strolling, resting, flower appreciation, scenic viewing, and immersion in sunlight and nature.

Through careful terrain shaping, meticulous plantings, and rich detailed design, landscape architects have transformed the once flat and monotonous site into a diverse, botanical-rich artful garden that offers various perspectives for viewing and multiple paths for exploration. The Blooming Garden seamlessly integrates with the preserved and updated facilities of the former airport, not only meets the needs of botanical exhibition during the Garden Expo, but has also becom a popular urban green space after the event. The Blooming Garden serves as a showcase of botanical artistry, a three-dimensional spatial design landscape, a public space for civic leisure, and an ecological garden that transforms urban grey infrastructure into green open space, creating a new urban lifestyle and landscape culture.
