This project centers around the garden of a historic church in a Transylvanian town. More than a mere landscape redesign, it reflects a respectful dialogue between tradition and contemporary landscape architecture. The result is a peaceful, welcoming space that supports reflection, conversation, and connection – both spiritual and communal.

Context and vision

The church and its surrounding buildings form a quiet courtyard at the heart of the local community. The intention was not to radically transform the space, but to revitalize it: to introduce structure, softness, and seasonal rhythm while maintaining the modest character of the site.

The client – the local parish – expressed a clear desire for a garden that invites people in, where residents and visitors alike can sit, talk, or pause for a moment in silence.

Design approach

The layout preserves the central lawn and circulation axis, while gently guiding movement along curved, cobblestone paths. Custom wooden benches create small gathering areas and places to rest, often oriented toward views of the church façade or the surrounding perennial beds.

Lighting elements are discreetly integrated, supporting nighttime visibility and safety without disturbing the peaceful atmosphere.

The planting design is structured in low, layered beds of perennials and shrubs, selected for their resilience and seasonal variation. Flowering species like Penstemon, Spiraea, Lavandula, Kniphofia, and Alchemilla add texture and color from spring to autumn, while evergreen groundcovers and existing trees anchor the space year-round.

The garden is equally enjoyable from a distance and close-up: inviting visitors to stroll through or simply appreciate the view from the benches or church windows.

Symbolic and social value

In this project, landscape becomes an active medium of care – not just for the environment, but for the people who use it. The garden offers a rare balance of structure and softness, privacy and openness, stillness and vitality.

In rural contexts, public space design often lacks dedicated resources. This church garden sets a quiet but powerful precedent: that even modest interventions, when rooted in respect and generosity, can foster belonging, pride, and beauty in the everyday lives of a community.
