Appreciations towards K-Thengono Design Studio for providing the following description:
The project is located in a residential area in South Tangerang BSD. Its physical strategy seeks a balance between openness and privacy while optimizing natural lighting and ventilation. Taking advantage of the conditions of the land transfer, the design carefully calibrates the building massing to respond to the outdoor views while maintaining a more restrained living environment. The handover conditions were not simply treated as exposed facades, but became an opportunity to organize the residence around a series of framed views, courtyards and outdoor spaces.
Located within a residential estate in BSD, South Tangerang, this residence is shaped by a massing strategy that negotiates openness and privacy while optimizing natural light and ventilation. Taking advantage of its hook site condition, the design carefully calibrates its volumes to respond to outdoor views while maintaining a more introverted domestic environment. Rather than treating the corner condition simply as an exposed facade, the site becomes an opportunity to organize the house around a sequence of framed views, courtyards, and outdoor spaces.

The first floor is developed as an L-shaped public volume, arranged along the front and sides of the site. This configuration encloses a quieter exterior area at the rear of the site, becoming the main visual focus of this level. The layout creates a gradual transition between the street and the more private interior, keeping the public spaces connected to the outdoors while retaining a sense of quiet retreat. The larger upper volume above accommodates private functions, establishing a clear spatial hierarchy between public and private areas.

The composition begins with a public L-shaped volume on the ground floor, oriented along the site’s front and side edges. This configuration encloses a quieter outdoor zone at the rear of the plot, which becomes the primary visual focus at this level. The arrangement creates a gradual transition between the street and the more private interior, allowing communal spaces to remain connected to the outdoors while preserving a sense of retreat. Above it, a larger upper mass accommodates the private program, establishing a clear spatial hierarchy between communal and intimate areas.

The upper massing is broken down and manipulated so that circulation becomes the architectural design device. At the front of the house, the volume is stretched downwards, creating a vertical connection between the ground floor and the upper floors. At the rear, the volume lifts upwards, opening the building to the sky and extending the sequence of outdoor spaces. The circulation on the second floor is shaped into an indoor theater for movie screenings, which leads to the rooftop swimming pool. Here, movement between functions becomes an integral part of the spatial experience, rather than just a way of connecting rooms.

The upper volume is split and manipulated to generate circulation as an architectural device. At the front of the house, the mass is pulled downward, creating a vertical connection between the ground floor and the upper level. Toward the rear, the volume is lifted upward, allowing the architecture to open toward the sky and extend the sequence of outdoor spaces. Circulation on the second floor is shaped as an indoor theater for movie screenings, which then gives access to the rooftop swimming pool. Here, movement between programs becomes an integral part of the spatial experience rather than simply a means of connecting rooms.

The manipulation of volumes allows the outdoor sequence to be extended, with circulation leading from the upper living area to the swimming pool and up to the highest outdoor yoga space. A fully green roof adds another layer of landscape to this vertically organized residence. Together, these opposing operations create multiple circuits that connect indoor spaces with outdoor areas on different levels, encouraging one to move through the house and experience the different spaces from ever-changing perspectives.

This manipulation of mass enables an extended outdoor sequence, where movement continues from the upper living area to the pool and then ascends again to an outdoor yoga space at the highest level. A fully planted green roof crowns the building, adding another layer of landscape to the vertically organized residence. Together, these opposing gestures create multiple loops that link interior spaces with outdoor areas across various levels, encouraging movement through the house and allowing different spaces to be experienced from changing perspectives.

The layered circulation strategy also promotes cross ventilation and brings natural light deep into the interior. Circulation areas surrounding the building are shaded with operable woven panels made from recycled PET rattan that allow air to pass through while filtering light and maintaining privacy. These panels provide a flexible environmental conditioning layer that can adjust to changing sunlight conditions throughout the day. The rounded corners respond directly to the geometry of the transferred plot, easing the transition between volumes and softening the overall volume. Meanwhile, bamboo-textured concrete is used for the ground-floor facade, introducing a tactile material character to the base of the home.
