Appreciation towards TRESTLE for providing the following description:

settle invites people to rethink public interior space, exploring how it can be a catalyst for collective experiences in modern cities. Inspired by the functionality and adaptability of traditional Irish furniture, the installation examines how a set of carefully considered objects can constitute a new, albeit temporary, public interior space.

settle is a provocation to reimagine the public interior as a catalyst for collective experience within the modern city. Inspired by the functionalism and adaptability of Irish vernacular furniture, the installation explores how an infrastructure of considered objects can formulate a new, albeit temporary, public interior.

Hannah Arendt once spoke of the dangers of living a completely private life and the importance of being connected to and differentiated from others through “a common world of things.” We believe that public interior spaces are a critical component of this world.

Settlement responds to the tendency within modern capitalist structures to place the individual above all else, and the consequent devaluation of the collective spaces in which people live together. As more and more of our lives take place in the digital public realm, the physical presence of public rooms that are carefully considered, dignified and rooted in specific places is becoming increasingly rare in daily life.

settle is a reaction against modern capitalist structures which prioritize the individual above all else – devaluing the collective spaces human beings inhabit together. With our lives increasingly occupying the digital commons, the tangibility of considered, dignified, and situated public rooms is an increasingly rare phenomenon within daily life.

Based on this thinking, Settle proposes a building with a public interior. It explores the archetypes of public interior spaces that interest us: spatial order, boundaries, material properties, repetition and variation, and tests how these qualities can be generated through material combinations of movable objects and spatial gestures.

With this in mind, settle proposes an architecture of civic interiority. It explores ideas of the prototypical public interior that interest us – spatial order, threshold, material character, repetition and variation – and tests how these can be generated through a moveable material arrangement of objects and gestures.

In the context of the climate emergency, we believe that repurposing existing buildings is crucial. We hope to explore how a set of carefully considered objects with practical functions can form a new, albeit temporary, public interior space and invite people to enter and use it.

In the context of a climate emergency, we consider it imperative to reuse buildings that already exist. We wish to explore how an infrastructure of considered and functional objects can formulate a new, albeit temporary, public interior that invites occupation and use.
