MOTTISFONT ABBEY NATIONAL TRUST WALLED GARDEN HAMPSHIRE

Aralia Landscape Design practice won a national competition run by the National Trust to re-design the 17TH century one acre walled garden at Mottisfont Abbey, known as ‘The Frame Yard’. This historic garden is a beautifully framed walled garden, and serves as the primary entrance to the highly renowned, world-famous Rose Garden at Mottisfont.

Aralia’s design blended contemporary and traditional, using traditional materials and features that harked back to Mottisfont Abbey origins, whilst also incorporating contemporary elements. Aralia also took inspiration from the original glass houses of the property, incorporating contemporary glasshouses to be used for great viewing platforms of the gardens. One of the Aralia landscape design teams main focus was to create a design that would encourage visitors to the English Heritage Garden all year around. By incorporating an observation dome, sheltered space and an evergreen palette that would add interest in every season, the design would appeal to visitors throughout the year.  Due to an internal strategy change at the National Trust this project is currently on hold.

Domed Observation Structure, Contemporary Glass Houses, Solar Panels, Green walls/Living Walls, Edible Planting, Magnificent Bespoke Water Feature, Paving & Pathways, Evergreen & Herbaceous Planting.

“We found our experience of working with Aralia enjoyable, informative and productive….all in the right measure. They were extremely responsive and went the extra mile to understand our National Trust property and work with the team here.”

Paul Cook, Mottisfont Abbey General Manager
