Appreciation towards Snøhetta for providing the following description:
In the Lech Mountains of Austria, Snøhetta designed a landscape installation on the roof of the Zugerbergbahn cable car’s summit station. This artistic intervention uses perception as a clue to bring new experiences to visitors and further cements Lech’s status as a year-round tourist destination.

Since August, the “Mirror of Lech Mountain” has been offering visitors a unique mountain experience. Snøhetta’s art installation for the Zugerbergbahn allows people to appreciate the majestic mountain landscape from different angles. The surrounding natural scenery is reflected in the shallow pool on the roof of the summit station, and the panoramic view of mountain peaks and clouds is transformed into a reflection, changing the viewer’s perception. The design focuses not only on the appearance of the installation, but also on how it affects the behavior of visitors, encouraging them to feel and interact with the surrounding environment. This interweaving of perceptions inspires people to experience mountain landscapes in new ways.

Stepping stones above the water lead to a natural rock protruding from the water. Surrounded by light and reflection, this open viewpoint invites visitors to stop and take in the scene before them. The rock in the center of the pool brings a moment of tranquility and brings people closer to nature.
Stepping stones on the water’s surface lead to a natural rock rising out of the water. This exposed lookout point, set amid a play of light and reflections, invites visitors to pause and marvel. Its location in the middle of the water basin offers a moment of tranquility and a sense of closeness to nature.

The weather also becomes part of the experience, constantly changing people’s perception of their surroundings. On a sunny day, the reflection is clear and accurate; when the wind blows, the reflection gradually becomes blurred, and the ripples on the water surface bring a new natural experience. The mountains and sky, clouds and human figures merge into a picture that changes with every gust of wind and every change in light.

Surrounded by greenery, the pool invites visitors to relax with a variety of seats and lying areas made of larch wood and natural boulders. The venue creates a comfortable stay and is open to the public free of charge.

The summit station of the Zugerbergbahn cable car was built several years ago and will also operate in the summer from 2024. The “Mirror of the Lech Mountains” is part of a long-term strategy to increase the region’s attractiveness in the summer and make Lech an attractive year-round tourist destination. The installation fits naturally into a series of high-quality, creative art programmes: they respond to the mountainous landscape and attract new groups of visitors. Other projects under the same strategy include Antony Gormley’s art project Horizon Field, and James Turrell’s Sky Space Lech.
