MIND STUDIO: Chengdu, renowned since ancient times as the “Land of Abundance,” owes its fame to its lush subtropical monsoon climate. This climate fosters a rich, vertical ecosystem, positioning the city among the world’s most biodiverse metropolises.

Located in the Ludao (Egret Island) district, a vibrant area blending urban culture, natural ecology, and international artistic flair, this project represents the cutting edge of Chengdu’s urban aesthetic. In this fertile, mountainous landscape, we’ve adopted a “Mountain & Forest Aesthetic” to address the urban longing for beauty and authenticity. We explored how art can transcend mere surface decoration and return to being a perceptible, expressive language. The artistic spirit within these mountains and forests goes beyond rational observation; it can be the vibrancy found within a verdant grove or the sensory echoes ignited with each step taken in daily life. This artistic spirit carries the emotional intensity inherent in the very source of life.

Inspired by the unique blend of art and ecology that nourishes this land, we responded with a bolder natural vocabulary to echo its inherent ecological foundation and with a more liberated artistic language to resonate with the memories of Ludao Island. The design process, then, shifts from a mere construction of forms to a renewed exploration of the ‘urban mountain forest expression.’

Wandering Through Rainforest Islets: Exploring the Vitality of Nature

This is not merely a display space for “seeing,” but a daily immersive stroll through mountain forests and verdant islets—akin to traversing a continuously evolving art gallery.

The project’s overall spatial layout adopts an “archipelago” structure. The front area features a hotel-style arrival sequence, while the central area’s sunken courtyard, “Egret Hideaway,” serves as the spiritual core. The first-floor courtyard is scattered with daily-life islands, like islets in a stream, and the elevated space extends into a boundless garden where people, nature, and art coexist. Each space possesses its distinct personality, resonating with one another to form a cohesive wandering path.

Upon entering the “Leisurely Return” front area, you’re greeted by two gracefully spreading Spanish olive trees. Their blue-gray leaves seem to evoke both the Mediterranean sun and the humid atmosphere. This is paired with a Blue Emerald quartzite feature wall and a gently flowing water feature with an olive-green pool bottom. In this gentle setting, a sense of dynamism begins to emerge, revealing the potential for another aesthetic: one where the rationality and wild vitality of the mountain forest coexist.

Stepping indoors, visitors are met with a breathtaking view through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows: the sunken “Egret Hideaway” courtyard, plunging 5.5 meters below. This space feels like a secret realm, treasured deep within a rainforest, quietly awaiting discovery. The inspiration for this space comes from the lush, dreamlike, and vibrant primeval forests depicted by Henri Rousseau, focusing not on literal replication but rather on the “sensory experience” of nature. Thus, the design uses varying elevations to create a rich ecological niche, crafting a treasured, secret realm deep within the rainforest.

In the courtyard, padauk trees support a verdant skyline, their umbrella-like canopies casting dappled light and shadow, creating a tranquil and hazy atmosphere. The enormous leaves of the Red Abyssinian banana dance in the gentle breeze, their intricate veins tracing the network of life like artistic brushstrokes. Feathery ferns and gardenias from Hainan Island intertwine and grow in graceful postures, presenting an unadorned expression of life.

The water features unfold subtly in multiple states: either flowing gently like a stream through winding paths, or cascading in delicate, curtain-like linear streams along the edges of flower beds. The water is neither turbulent nor vast, yet it is ever-present, infusing the space with a light, dynamic quality.

Ascending the steps, the “Stream Islets” courtyard on the first floor feels like a bright, open shoal after traversing a dense forest. An exceptionally shallow water feature lightly carpets the ground, refreshing like the sea. Circular-cut stone stepping stones resemble floating islands, appearing to drift and intersect. Mobile planters, like lightweight boats moored on the sea, are filled with greenery.

The spiritual focal point of the courtyard is a highly sculptural, irregularly shaped pergola. Its freeform curves and seamless construction break conventional architectural logic, devoid of visible structural framework yet full of muscular tension. The exterior is coated with a light, beige stone-textured artistic coating, while the interior features a silver-toned texture that echoes the interplay of light and shadow from the plants, transforming it into a floating “artistic organism” within the mountain forest. Beneath the pergola, a red art sofa, like a blossoming bud in the forest, is vibrant and full, paired with a suspended fireplace’s bonfire, creating a central space for conversation, repose, and immersion.

Surrounding it, a relaxed collection of xeriscaping gravel, along with agave, kalanchoe, and sisal plants in muted, Morandi-inspired tones, resemble the free-flowing brushstrokes of a deconstructivist artist, forming distinct nodes of respiration that delineate the vitality of the space.

The spaces within the courtyard feature no clear boundaries. Passing through the dappled light and shadows of the trees, conversational floating islands, a sunlit platform in the depths of a serene realm, and flowing pathways alongside the water naturally permeate one another, leaving “elastic space” for life, encouraging people to freely explore and activate their senses.

The elevated garden extends this juxtaposition of vitality and aesthetic order. The paving borrows Mondrian-esque proportional divisions, using rational structure to support the uninhibited growth of nature. Plants freely “spill out” beyond geometric boundaries, creating a visual rhythm where tension and order coexist.

The sculptural fountain is constructed from dark ink-colored glass and wave-washed stone. The former uses laser-cut pieces of glass to simulate the ripples of a deep pool, while the latter bears the movement of flowing water on its stone grain, constructing a scene where visual, auditory, and tactile experiences intertwine.

Perceptible Design: Emotion, Materiality, Vitality

Design is never a one-sided construction, but rather a collaborative process between people and nature. We seek a “resonant relationship” between material and emotion, function and feeling—not to create spaces for display, but for authentic interaction with people.

The presence of water is an immerser of atmosphere: it falls lightly upon curved flower beds, flows beneath stepping stones, and emerges gently from sculptures, subtly shifting one’s emotional rhythm. With each breath, the space comes alive through water.

Plants are not merely used as green volumes to fill space; we intentionally create a layered sense of dense forest and a rhythmic variation in the verdant islets, using the diverse “tension” of plants to shape the ambiance of the space. The juxtaposition of the Red Abyssinian banana and the padauk tree releases the childlike curiosity and wonder of the dense rainforest. The combination of bird’s nest fern and kalanchoe, on the other hand, evokes the imagination and sensations of an exotic vacation. We believe that plants possess more than just “form”; they also have “personality”—their temperament is precisely the emotional tone of the vitality within the space.

Soft furnishings are no longer subordinate to the logic of “furniture,” but rather breathe with the environment, responding to every sensory detail experienced upon entering the space. We break free from a restrained posture, allowing the soft furnishings to also possess wildness and vibrancy. In “Egret Hideaway,” a petal-shaped white sofa resembles a flower quietly blooming in the morning light—unobtrusive yet possessing a softness that envelops everything; the full, red chairs, on the other hand, are like tropical fruits quietly emerging from deep within the rainforest.

In the Stream Islets, a translucent, dark green resin coffee table resembles amber, preserving the roots and watermarks of the rainforest. White seats invite immersion, and as the curves of the seating conform to the body, gentle breathing is embraced by a soft enclosure.

Materials listen to the senses; scale evokes resonance. Stepping stones float, the fireplace whispers, a moment of sitting, a glance back at the courtyard… people are not observers, but co-inhabitants. The space becomes a recalibration of “sensory perception”—here, design doesn’t exist to express, but to awaken the senses.

Transforming Boundaries into Scenery: Concealing Regulations in a ‘Sea of Islets’

The biggest challenge of this project stemmed from the nearly 42% occupation of the site by fire access routes, which significantly compressed the spatial organization and sense of experience. Faced with this difficulty, we did not simply provide a perfunctory answer with traditional paving. Instead, we introduced a flowing linear aesthetic and a dialogue of multiple mediums, concealing the “boundaries” within the “scenery” and subtly hiding the regulatory constraints.

The design utilizes three shades of curving paving, layered gently with wood-grain platforms, constructing a tidal rhythm that connects the green islands of the entrance sequence with the themed courtyards. The extremely shallow water surface acts as a softener of boundaries, infusing the space with a sense of breath and lightness, while artistic planters provide shaded greenery. Pebbles and groundcover plants stitch together the texture transition at the edges of the boundaries. Ultimately, the originally cold and rigid surfaces are quietly painted into a fifth facade reflected in the water, achieving a balance between safety and aesthetics, and reshaping the rhythm of the site.

结语

Conclusion

We reject contrived spectacles, but not the power of profound emotion. As urban life increasingly trends toward rational order, “Mountain & Forest Aesthetics” offers a new possibility: using the wildness of nature to respond to the order of life and using the authenticity of art to awaken sensory perception within the space. Our hope is that people in this space are not only soothed, but also awakened.

Ultimately, the artistic will of the mountain forest points not toward a distant, imagined nature, nor toward the accumulation of decorative symbols, but toward the awakened perception and stimulated vitality experienced with each daily entrance, pause, and gaze. This, then, is another expression of the mountain forest that we have sought to discover.
