Our clients were in the later stages of their house renovations, wanting a garden that would capture and complement the renovated interior’s very light, spacious and classical contemporary feel. The large rear garden was the primary focus for Aralia for this project. The design solution separated the garden space into a series of contemporary terrace areas & entertaining garden spaces. Aralia wanted to create a mix of ‘rooms’ in this urban garden that would provide the family with extensive outdoor living and entertaining areas. The upper garden terrace area, directly connected to the interior, was designed with a clean and contemporary feel in order to provide a breathing space and connecting space from the house into these outdoor spaces. Sunken below this terrace, the garden rooms were protected from the view of neighbouring properties, as well as the house, in order to provide each space with a more intimate feeling.

Each garden room was designed with a different function in mind, the first being similar to a dining room, containing a large dining set that would be perfect for dinner parties and entertaining. The second terrace will be more intimate and act as a comfortable lounge area that includes both soft furnishings and a fireplace, perfect for after dinner or day time lounging. The central section of the garden provides a sort of transitional point between each section, as well as lending itself as a focal feature and backdrop for the rest of the garden. This area will be a formal lawn, with rows of pleached trees included to maintain privacy and screening as well as a water feature to create interest. Finally, a smaller terrace is hidden away at the end of the garden. This area provides the perfect space for views back to the house, as well as for the clients to relax and eat, enjoying the charcoal BBQ and cascading water wall.

Aralia are working as Landscape Architects working within a multi-disciplinary consultant team and a range of sub-contractors. Aralia were responsible for concept creation through to design detail and site monitoring of the build. Photos courtesy of Quorn Stone, who supplied the Dijon brushed pavers.
