Appreciation towards 08014 Arquitectura for providing the following description:
Les Fonts de Relinars are a group of natural springs that emerge from cracks in the rock. Located in the forest hinterland of the Serra de l’Obac Mountains, this is a small forest glade with about twenty springs, most of which were artificially transformed many years ago. The springs are plentiful except during periods of drought, and are channeled into a cistern that supplied water to the water mill of La Fàbrica de Relinars until the 1970s.
Les Fonts de Relinars are natural springs that gush from cracks in the rock. A small clearing in the middle of the forest, in the Serra de l’Obac, consisting of around twenty fountains, most of which were modified by human intervention many years ago. Except during periods of drought, the water flows abundantly and is channeled through a ditch to a pond which, until the 1970s, supplied the water mill at La Fàbrica de Relinars.

Les Fonts is not only the source of a set of water conservancy facilities, it has historically been a gathering place for the residents of Relinars and hikers from all over the world, and it still is today. The site is several meters lower than the forest road leading here, shaded by elm trees and close to streams, springs and canals, forming a sheltered place that regulates the climate with the help of the natural environment.

Les Fonts is not only the source of a hydraulic infrastructure, but has historically been -and continues to be today- a meeting place for the neighbors of Relinars and hikers from far and wide. A bioclimatic shelter located a few meters below the forest track leading to the site, in the shade of a group of elm trees, right next to the water from the stream, the springs and the ditch.

The main objectives of the project are to improve the accessibility of the site, better integrate it into the surrounding environment, increase vegetation cover, and improve the operation of water conservancy facilities.

The main objectives of our project are to create a space that is more accessible and better integrated into its surroundings, to increase vegetation cover and to improve the functioning of the hydraulic infrastructure.

The project adopts a linear layout, extending from the entrance stairs in the north-south direction to the last spring, with a partially exposed water channel as the skeleton. In front of the spring, the design uses the platform built many years ago to expand the trail into a gathering space. Its edge is a 25-meter-long linear bench with an irregular outline and an inward concave shape. The area for people’s activities is paved with natural stone slabs; a planting zone of about 70 square meters is formed between the benches and the edge of the platform, and native plants from the low-altitude slopes of the St. Lawrence Mountains and the Obak Mountains are planted as a vegetation background that leads the line of sight to the spring.
The project follows a linear layout, running north-south from the access staircase to the last of the fountains, with the partially exposed ditch acting as its backbone. In front of the fountains, making use of a platform built years ago, the path widens to form a gathering space bordered by a 25-metre-long linear bench, with an irregular, generally concave shape. The area accessible to the people is paved with natural stone tiles, whilst, between the bench and the edge of the platform, a flowerbed of around 70m² has been created, featuring native plant species from the lower slopes of Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac: a backdrop of vegetation that draws the eye towards Les Fonts.

The project improves the water conservancy function of the spring area through a number of measures: expanding the water collection range of the irrigation canal; setting up a backup drainage system for the platform to play a role when the spring water flow exceeds the maximum capacity of the water canal; the planting belt is equipped with an independent drainage system and connected to the overflow port that leads the water into the stream; at the same time, a protective embankment is constructed with natural stones to protect the site from the impact of stream flooding.

The project improves the hydraulic functionality of Les Fonts area through various interventions: the catchment area of the irrigation channel is expanded; an alternative drainage system for the platform is proposed for when the flow from the fountains exceeds the channel’s maximum capacity; the flowerbed is provided with its own drainage system connected to spillways that drain into the stream; a natural breakwater is formed to protect the site from the stream’s floodwaters.

The project abandoned the concrete used in previous renovations and instead used two materials. The paving, benches and protective embankments are all made of local limestone, whose color and characteristics are close to the original rocks on the site. The handrails and steps are made of rust-colored ribbed steel; this construction for the steps also allows the original stone steps to remain visible.
The project uses two materials, doing away with the concrete used in the previous intervention. For the paving, the benches and the breakwater, a local limestone with shades and characteristics similar to the natural rock found on site. The handrails and the staircase are made of corrugated rusted steel rods which, in the case of the staircase, allow the stone steps of the original staircase to remain exposed.
