The clients were due to move from their current home with a large mature garden into a new Penthouse apartment in Fulham Reach, London. Aralia’s prime remit was to provide a ‘garden’ of sorts, even if it was on an 8th floor London roof terrace. No easy feat!

Due to apartment blocks on both sides of the penthouse roof terrace, the clients requested a certain amount of screening for privacy and a sense of intimacy, whilst also still allowing a beautiful view from their terrace through to the river Thames. Aralia kept this in mind, creating a design that would take advantage of, and focus on, these views, whilst still retaining privacy from surrounding blocks.

The terrace leads directly from the lounge and dining room through a pair of glass sliding doors. We therefore wanted to ensure that even in Winter the terrace would provide great views from inside. To do this Aralia suggested a beautiful garden lighting scheme that would withstand the elements and shine through in all seasons. Originally our plans included an Outdoor Sculpture – evident in the 3D Visuals – but this was removed during the evolution of the process as we worked with our clients to design the roof terrace exactly to their liking.

We  introduced an outdoor seating area, with two contemporary, bespoke chairs used to juxtapose the wild nature of the garden. The seating area used to create a focal point towards and across the river to capitalise on the penthouse roof terrace’s view across the Thames. To add to the sometimes, grey London sky, we included a vibrant colour palette of blue’s, purples oranges and reds in addition to lush green foliage in order to create a rich textural backdrop.

Aralia are working as Landscape Architects working within a multi-disciplinary consultant team and a range of sub-contractors. Aralia were responsible for concept creation through to design detail.  In addition, Aralia will be providing a full landscape build service for this roof terrace project, taking the project from concept through to full implementation of the entire roof terrace masterplan.
