This unique property in Kent, originally built as a castle in 1760, had been added to in 1920 in the same style and has been developed as a hotel and now split into individual residences.

Our client intends to use his apartment as a weekend and holiday residence, though he may also sometimes work from here. The setting is a challenging one, with extensive views over the sea but also a need for shelter and privacy within some of the garden spaces. There are also some challenging changes of level. The client required dining and lounging space, an outdoor kitchen and barbecue, a hot tub to be integrated into the design and storage. Art and sculpture were also part of the brief but no particular style preference.

Aralia introduced a palette of contemporary materials that are not out of keeping with the historic nature of the building, introducing silvers, greys and dark charcoals to create unity with adjacent garden spaces. Privacy and shelter were created with tall hedging, creating a temptingly appealing view to the sea through a series of overhead arches. A secondary seating area closer to the cliff edge offers panoramic views whilst the hot tub is raised to benefit from these too.
