Monolith

Discreet and unassuming, Monolith is its own private affair.

Similar to an unground lair or hidden James Bond-style residence, the form and its connection to the nearby beach is kept a secret from its frontage, with the façade and its comprising elements giving little away about what exists beyond the front door. Ushering movement through the subtly arced timber fin walls on the lower level, the central entry space is an artful moment in itself.

A dramatic oculus opening connects the levels once inside, bringing light down from the level and sky above, adding an oversized and sculptural feature to the main living, dining, and kitchen space. With private access to the beach below, the outdoor living areas offer a similar privacy, calmed by the movement of the water. An internal courtyard then offers a more private enclosure, while the upper level connects with views to the city. The combination of curved and linear elements, together with timber warming the underside of the ceilings and soffits, the otherwise monochromatic home is endowed a richness through a natural texture.
