Tatnall School Eco-courtyard
Howrks had the privilege of reimagining a school courtyard which also serves as the main entrance for its upper and middle schools. The space had remained virtually untouched since created in 1952. The mission was to honor the sites rich history while transforming the space in a vibrant, functional and sustainable centerpiece for the school and community.
The redesigned courtyard now serves as both welcoming entrance and dynamic outdoor environment for learning, gathering and celebration.
The vision was to honor tradition with forward-thinking innovation, with a focused approach to creating a sustainable, multifunctional space that reflected the school’s mission and values.
This distinctive courtyard design features irregular flagstone hardscape details with planted joints that mange storm water by absorbing run off and directing into subterranean basins, which are tied into the existing drainage system.
The floating stone benches illuminate from beneath, creating a welcoming and function outdoor space, offering students and teachers a serene environment for learning, collaboration and relaxation.
