The SorenGo GREEN Line project pursues the redevelopment of public space along the main road of the municipality of Sorengo (via Gemmo – Cortivallo – Cremignone – Laghetto), which crosses the municipality from north to south. The project offers an innovative vision and promotes health, social interaction, and urban sustainability.

Through the creation of green spaces and recreational areas, the project promotes physical and mental well-being, encourages social interaction, and offers new ecological pathways that increase biodiversity. This approach produces high urban ecological quality thanks to the use of native plantations, the creation of new interconnected green spaces, and the enhancement of the area’s natural heritage.

The SorenGo GREEN Line project proposes the following interventions:

Depaving – via Gemmo

The project involves the depaving and greening of via Gemmo, covering a total area of 603 m2. The transformation of asphalted spaces into green spaces, planting native plants and promoting biodiversity, serves as a concrete example of how cities can evolve toward more sustainable and resilient models. This type of intervention is also part of the “sponge city” concept, where the goal is to make the urban environment more permeable, promoting rainwater infiltration and improving the ecological quality of the area.

Redevelopment – Gemmo roundabout

The urban redevelopment of the Gemmo roundabout represents a significant example of how nature and city can be integrated, restoring value to the urban environment through sustainable design choices. The project includes the planting of a large tree, a Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’. The choice of this tree is not merely aesthetic, but is part of a broader project to enhance the urban landscape, giving the roundabout a less “road” and more “urban” feel.

Meeting – bench

A specific bench model was created for Sorengo. The word “stop,” from the Latin substare, means “to be or stand under,” but also evokes the figurative meaning of “to hold still” or “to stand firm.” It is a moment that interrupts the rhythm of the journey, a pause that invites us to slow down and reconnect with our surroundings. Stopping doesn’t just mean taking a break, but experiencing the area differently, rediscovering its details and paths, often through the simple act of sitting on a bench.

Nature in the city – the apple orchard

The urban orchard enhances the multiple functions offered by the area with the following specific objectives: aesthetic, ecological, social, and educational. Twenty-nine apple trees of two local varieties were planted: Malus domestica “Melo squisito di Muzzano” and Malus domestica “Melo banana,” a variety discovered in the apple orchard’s land registry. The orchard is accessed through four entrances, enhanced by mixed hedges. Inside, a spiral path was created using clippings from the flowerbed. At the center of the apple orchard, a space with wooden benches has been created, serving as a meeting point.

Redevelopment – new inclusive public space

As part of the waterproofing renovation of the plaza above the sports park refreshment area, the project focused on sustainability and the creative reuse of existing materials, transforming the space into a more functional and inclusive area.

The high-quality granular material, originally used under the concrete slabs, was recovered to improve the levels beneath the park’s trees. The old concrete slabs, a source of heat islands, were replaced with “calcestre di Saltrio”, an eco-friendly yellow material that improves the plaza’s aesthetics and sustainability. Some of the concrete slabs were reused to correct the uneven slope of the plaza and relocated to create new seating, benches, and play areas. The goal is to create an intergenerational environment to foster interaction between the community and residents of the Pagnolo retirement home. The project demonstrates how a circular approach and attention to detail can be a response to climate change, simultaneously enhancing green heritage and urban public space.

Green love

Road markings were interpreted to enhance the perception of the space as a whole. To indicate a crossing and moderate vehicle speeds, a graphic pattern was drawn on the asphalt based on the serial and rhythmic repetition of the “0” symbol, normally used to indicate a 30 km/h zone. In this project, the composition of the zero sign on the road becomes a form that, despite being composed of individual elements, is perceived as a coherent whole, marking the pedestrian crossing and creating a sense of visual continuity between the sidewalk of via Laghetto and the Colle recreational woods. The green color of the markings was specifically designed for this project and was composed using paints approved for road markings.
