Improvement of the Embankment Along the Terebenka River

The Terebenka river valley, transformed into a cascade of ponds during the Soviet period, is today a key component of Chekhov’s green framework and one of the city’s most significant natural spaces. Each pond possesses its own character, scale, and functional identity, forming a sequence of diverse yet interconnected landscapes. The improvement project builds upon this diversity, treating it as a value and integrating it into a broader concept of a unified recreational environment – a kind of «urban oasis» where nature and everyday urban life intertwine.

The improvement of the first pond is conceived as a starting point for a new approach to the development of public spaces along the entire length of the Terebenka river, and subsequently across the city as a whole. The project establishes principles of careful interaction with the natural landscape, openness, and a wide range of use scenarios, laying the foundation for the consistent renewal of the urban environment.

The area is designed as a multifunctional public space capable of adapting to various modes of use. Promenades, quiet resting areas by the water, children’s play zones, sports facilities, and spaces for cultural and public events are woven into a single spatial structure. Functional zoning is organized to ensure year-round use, adjusting patterns of activity according to the season, time of day, and the needs of residents.

Particular attention is given to connectivity and transit. The project provides comfortable and safe passage through the site, integrating it into everyday urban routes. Access to the water is arranged through stairs and ramps, ensuring accessibility for different user groups. Thanks to the terraced terrain, pedestrian and bicycle flows are distributed across different slope levels, reducing potential conflicts.

All structures, platforms, and improvement elements are designed in close dialogue with the existing landscape, without disrupting its character. The terrain becomes an active participant in the design process, enhancing the site’s uniqueness while preserving the natural quality of the new public space.

The new recreation area has become the first public space in Chekhov oriented toward all categories of residents. A strategic approach to its design allows the site to be understood not as a local improvement project, but as a catalyst for the development of the broader urban environment, shaping new habits, routes, and everyday scenarios of interaction with nature.
